The Osa Peninsula has 2.5 percent of all the world’s biodiversity. Osa Peninsula has 500 different trees, 400 different birds, 40 different hummingbirds, 140 mammals,117diferent fresh water fish, all 6 large cats,100 amphibians,40 different frogs,100 butterflies, 10,000 insects, and 30 different lizards.
The Osa Peninsula represents only 3% of the land mass of Costa Rica and has 50% of all bird species in Costa Rica. It is a birder’s paradise.
Birds of the Osa Peninsula
There are over 450 bird species on the Osa Peninsula. My favorite is the Scarlet Macaws, with the largest population in Costa Rica. You do not have to go far to be in a Disneyland of birds. The best time to see them is in the early morning. The Green Parrots will start to fly at sunrise, in the hundreds. Love having my coffee at 4 am in the morning waiting for Animal Kingdom to wake up.
Corcovado National Park
The Osa Peninsula is home to Corcovado National Park. Corcovado Park is the largest national park in Costa Rica, covering 42,560 hectares or 425 sq km
On a typical day in Corcovado, you will see Scarlet macaws, green-headed Amazon parrots, white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, spider monkeys and squirrel monkeys, anteaters, sometimes pumas , tapir, peccaries, toucans and crocidiles.
There are three ranger stations in the park. Sirena Ranger Station is in the center of the park. It is the most popular place for seeing animals. UPDATE July 4th 2026! There is a sanitation problem at the station. It is supposed to be fixed by December 2026. At this time, they are only allowing 100 visitors to visit the Sirena Ranger station per day, compared to 300 visitors a day. Book your tour days in advance! Tour companies. Golfo Dulce
Golfo Dulce, or in English the sweet gulf, is actually a tropical fjord. Every year, from July to October, the Golfo Dulce is home to both northern and southern humpback whales. The humpback whales use the rich waters of the Golfo Dulce to raise their young. It is not uncommon to see the humpback whales at the beach.
One time I was beach fishing, and 100 meters out in the water was a mother humpback whale with her young one. They started all the way to my left, slowly swimming along, and would gracefully dive; the tails would disappear, and a couple of minutes later, they would surface. They were not in a hurry and swam right in front of me. It is moments like this that make you understand the rich ecological impact the Osa Peninsula has.

Animals of the Osa Peninsula is like Jurassic Park. Of course, the Corcovado Park is the place to see some of the 140 mammals on the Osa Peninsula.

Magical Osa Peninsula
Some people say the Osa Peninsula is magical. I have lived on the Osa Peninsula for over 14 yrs. I find myself still in awe of the Osa Peninsula.
Just this morning, my dog Alaska and I went to our favorite beach. The tide was going out. Alaska and I just sat down on the beach and looked at the water. It was flat calm, and the small 6-inch waves rolled onto the beach with a faint sound. We sat there for 10 min, taking in all the serenity of the gulf.
It was my dog and I on the whole beach, yes, magical it was, then, above in a tree, the scarlet macaws started to screech; they were eating the beach almonds.
If you want to be absorbed in nature, the Osa Peninsula is the spot. It has been ranked among the top 4 places to visit in the world by The New York Post in 2026.
