Green Season Osa Peninsula

When most people think of a tropical vacation, they picture endless, cloudless blue skies and a sun that never quits. But if you ask those of us who live here, or the travelers who return year after year, we’ll tell you a secret: the Green Season Osa Peninsula comes alive!
There is a common misconception that the rainy season means “ruined” days. In reality, it is the most refreshing, vibrant, and intimate time to experience the Golfo Dulce and the surrounding rainforest. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to visit, let me tell you why the next few months are actually the best time to be here.
The World in High Definition
The first thing you notice during the Green Season Osa Peninsula is the color. “Green” doesn’t quite do it justice. It is an electric, neon, deep emerald that seems to glow from within. Without the rain, the Osa wouldn’t be the biological crown jewel that it is. The rain is the lifeblood of our flora and fauna.
When the afternoon showers arrive—usually like clockwork for about an hour—the air instantly refreshes. The dust of the dry season is washed away, and the scent of damp earth and blooming jasmine fills the air. It’s nature’s way of hitting the reset button. You’ll find yourself sitting on a porch, coffee in hand, watching the mist roll over the canopy, feeling a level of peace that’s hard to find in the busy “high season.”
Your Own Private Paradise
Imagine walking onto a world-class beach and being the only person there. During the low season, the crowds thin out significantly. You aren’t sharing the sunset with dozens of other tourists; you are sharing it with the scarlet macaws and the crashing surf.
Because there are fewer people, the experience becomes deeply personal. You aren’t just another guest at a hotel or another body on a tour boat. You are a valued visitor. The pace of life slows down, and you get to see the Osa as it really is—quiet, majestic, and wild.
Luxury for Less
One of the most practical reasons to love this season is the value. Since it is considered the “low season,” you can often find incredible deals on luxury eco-lodges and boutique hotels that might be out of reach during the winter months. Tours are more flexible, and your budget stretches much further. You can stay longer, see more, and enjoy a higher level of comfort for a fraction of the price.
The Giants of the Golfo Dulce
Perhaps the most magical event of the rainy season happens beneath the surface of the water. The Green Season brings the humpback whales into the Golfo Dulce (the “Sweet Gulf”). These gentle giants travel thousands of miles to our protected, warm waters to give birth and raise their calves.
The Golfo Dulce is one of the only places on Earth where humpbacks from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres visit. Seeing a mother whale teach her calf to breach against a backdrop of lush, rain-washed mountains is a soul-stirring experience that you simply cannot get during the dry months.
Kayaking in the Mist
If you haven’t experienced a kayak tour during the Green Season, you are missing out on one of the Osa’s greatest treasures. The water in the gulf is often like glass. As you paddle through the mangroves or along the coastline, the light rain creates a rhythmic tapping on the water that is incredibly meditative.
The wildlife is also more active. Birds like toucans and trogons are easier to spot against the lush foliage, and the cooler temperatures mean the monkeys and sloths are often more mobile and visible than they are in the sweltering heat of March.
The Heart of the Osa
Without the rain, the Osa Peninsula would lose its soul. It is the rain that feeds the 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity found right here. It’s why the trees grow so tall, why the birds are so colorful, and why the air feels so pure.
When you visit during the Green Season, you aren’t just a tourist; you are a witness to the cycle of life that keeps this planet breathing. You’ll leave with more than just photos; you’ll leave with a sense of connection to the earth that only the rain can provide.
October and November.
Starting in October, going all the way to the end of November, it rains!
It does not just rain a little; there will be times when it will rain for days, sometimes weeks, nonstop 24/7
Cabin Fever!!
If you want to come for a visit during October and November, be prepared to stay indoors. For myself, this is the time of year when I write. which takes up a lot of time, then of course, taking naps fills in even more time. I find myself reflecting on a lot of things. But the truth be told, after 7 days of non-stop rain, Cabin Fever sets in!
For myself, I need to have blue skies! When it rains for days, all I need to see is a little patch of blue between all the grays. It resets my mind.
If you want to disconnect from the world, heal your soul, and refresh your mind, October and November would be perfect for you~ Osa green season!
