Osa Peninsula Rescue and Adoption was founded on April 10, 2012. Over the last 14. they have rescued over 2000 dogs and cats. They have given these animals hope and love and have found them loving, caring homes.
Lives of Dogs and Cats of Central America
I have lived on the Osa Peninsula for 15 years and in Central America for over 25 years. I have seen how Dogs and cats live in the Americas, and, to put it mildly, it is sometimes heartbreaking. You will see street dogs that are nothing but skin and bones, full of parasites. They look into your eyes for hope. Not sure if you can be trusted, they shake with fear. Hoping for emotions they have forgotten a long time ago from neglect and abuse: ALL THEY WANT IS TO BE JUST LOVED.

Different culture
It is a different culture in Central America when it comes to domestic animals. Dogs are there as guard dogs and bark at strangers that they do not know. When someone walks down my street whom the dogs do not know, one starts to bark, followed by all the dogs. That, for the most part, is their job. Some owners only feed them scraps. Cats are used for rodents, mice, and rats. Unlike in other parts of the world, where we look at Dogs and Cats as pets. In Central America, they are working animals first, then pets.
No money for medical

When it comes to an emergency, most owners do not have the money to take their animal to the veterinarian. I have a friend whose dog was losing an eye. They just let nature take its course. Now the dog has only one eye. A lot of dogs just lie in the street and get hit by cars sometimes. The owners will not take them to the veterinarian. The animals will walk with a limb the rest of their lives.
No sterilization
Most animal owner’s to not spend the money on getting their dogs and cats nutered or spade. Which is a problem for a lot of unwanted animals.
Every town has rescue programs

In all the places I have lived in Costa Rica, there is someone who cannot bear to see Dogs or cats living in despair. Puerto Jiménez is such a town.

Janina Schan. The founder of Osa Peninsula Rescue and adoption
I first met Janina over 10 years ago at Cabinas Jimenez Hotel. It was her mission to save dogs and cats one at a time. She would take the animal to the veterinarian. The animal would undergo a series of procedures to become healthy, including getting spayed or neutered. Also, she worked with the animals’ behavior issues. A lot of the animals had trust issues, and some were aggressive
After a total rehab of each dog or cat, Janina would find them loving homes.
Adopting a Dog or Cat

If you would like to adopt a dog or cat. Osa Peninsula Rescue and Adoption can arrange all the logistics. They have done a lot of adoptions to the USA
A lot of friends have adopted dogs and cats; some have 4 dogs. my German shepherd is an alpha dog or I would have a house load of Dogs.
VOLUNTEERS WERE NEEDED
Janina could not keep up with the rescue and adoption, at the time she was working a full-time job. Yami Moliva Calvo became a volunteer in 2019. In 2022, Yami became the manager of Osa Peninsula Rescue and Adoption. Janina’s life took a different turn, one she is very happy with. Janina is still a huge part of the rescue and adoption.
Janina handles the business side and logistics. Collecting donations and pays for food and veterinary care, plus social media.
