Horses on the Osa Peninsula and Costa Rica were first brought over in 1500 from the Spanish to as working horses. They would use them as a means of travel through the rough terrain of Costa Rica and the Osa Peninsula. The horses were short, strong Berber and Andalusian breeds.
By the 1800s, the horses were bred with Peruvian Paso horses, which became the Costarricense De Paso that we have today.
Costa Rica cowboys.
Sabanero Cowboys can still be seen today. The horse still plays a big part in the culture of Costa Rica. and are used on the large cattle farms called FINCAS or farms.
I live across from a big cattle farm, and at the end of the day. The Sabanero can be seen herding the cattle back to their shelter areas for the night.
Costa Ricans love their horses.
I have several local friends who have horses. They have trained their horses to dance and use different trotting moves. It is amazing what the horse and the owner can do together.
El Tope
El Tope is an event where Sabaneros and their horses perform their graceful dances. The biggest Tope. Tope de San Jose has thousands of people from all over Costa Rica watching the horse and cowboy become one with each other.
My neighbor’s family owns a horse finca that has been in their family for over 100 years.

Rancho Piro has been owned and operated by a local Costa Rican family for over 100 years.
The family have kept the ranch working from one generation to the next.
They have two tours, one at 9 am and another at 2 pm. Each tour is 3.5 hours. Starting at the ranch, going through their trails. Then the tour goes to the beach. The price is $70.00 per person.
The Horses
They have a total of 10 horses. All the horses are well managed. From a beginner horseman to advance their ranch boss will make sure that you have a horse that matches your riding skills.

To truly experience a Costa Rican ranch, they have Breakfast and lunch. Breakfast is $10.00, and lunch is $20.00. Reservations are required in advance.

She has been building her dream ranch for over 20 years. Now it is at a point where she welcomes people for tours.

Like all Texans, they love their horses, and Jana’s love for her horses can be seen in the gentle love she gives them. In return, her horses are part of her family. She has horseback tours on her farm.

The waterfall tours
On Jana’s farm, there is the largest waterfall on the Osa Peninsula. What a great way to cool off. People from all over the world come to her farm for the waterfall.
The bunk house
If you want to stay for a night or several days, the bunk house is right out of the old west.
After a long day of fun, sitting on the porch and telling stories is a big part of the Ranch. In the morning, the animas will wake you up with their greeting for another day. Have a cup of delicious Costa Rica coffee. The mornings are always slow.
After breakfast, take a walk around the farm, and you will see all the wildlife and hundreds of birds. Relax in the waterfall, take a nap, and forget the world.
Bird tours
If you love birds, this is the Ranch to be at. Jana knows where all the birds are. In the mornings, the green parrots will fly in the hundreds before settling down into the canopy. At which point, they are very hard to find.

Rancho Tropical was established in 2012. It was a cattle farm at first.
The cowboys on the ranch had a dream of taking tourists on horseback riding tours. The cowboys in the rainy season learned English. The dream became a reality. Now Rancho Tropical does horseback riding tours with visitors from all over the world.
The horseback riding tours start on Rancho Tropical, winding through the trails where you will see different wildlife. Then the cowboy guides will take you to the beaches. The tour last for 2.5 hours and the cost is $90.00

What to wear.
Long pants are a must. Good boots or sneakers will work. Having a hat is recommended. Bug spray is recommended.
